Marcus Aurelius was born on the 26th of April, 121 AD in Rome, Italy. He was a Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD. Besides being a successful leader he was also known for his thoughts on philosophy. He penned these writings, named Meditations on stoic philosophy and is known more for them than anything else today. He truly attempted to live his philosophy. These are his private thoughts on his daily life, philosophical musings, stoic beliefs, every day guidance and his self-improvement hacks. They were entries into his personal note book, believed to be written around 171-175 AD and first translated into English and then published in 1634. They are commonly divided into 12 chapters.
Stoicism is a philosophy that first came about in ancient Greece and then Rome, it teaches the development of self-control as a means of overcoming all. That virtue is sufficient for happiness, that material goods should be regarded indifferently and all is in an order according to the Gods and Nature. That wisdom, courage, moderation and justice, while living in harmony with nature, is all that is needed for a whole and fulfilling life.
This new translation by NM Few is updated for the modern ear, easily understandable and digestible. A must for leadership strategy, stoic philosophy, spirituality and self help. The wisdom and guidance here is just as useful today in our modern age as it was all those years ago.
